When I first saw this novella I wasn’t so sure about it. I thought it was going to be about Abby and Travis and while I love them and I want to read more about them, I didn’t want to see them go through unnecessary drama just for the sake of one more novel/novella that will give the author more money. I was glad to see that it was going to be about America and Shepley. I loved those two in Beautiful Disaster. I was expecting them at least to be married by the time this novel happens, but that wasn’t the case.
I always though of America and Shepley as the perfect couple and the one that was going to stay strong even when everything else was going to crumble down. In Something beautiful the struggle as they face some demons each one on his own and try to see how their lives will go on. Both of them want the same thing, but they just can’t seem to get it. During the whole novel I kept seeing how strongly they loved each other and I was wondering why they were doubting that love.
The little angst and everything else, made me realize what I miss in a book. It has been a while since I felt something while reading a book. I came to that conclusion when I was reading the book because I realized that I hadn’t felt this way reading a book for more time than I can remember.
The whole novella could have been characterized as over dramatic and that some things were over the top, but it doesn’t feel this way. I am not going to complain about the awful reminder of Travis’s conquests or about the spoilers I read about the Maddox brother. After reading this novella I just can’t say a bad thing about it.
I must admit that I cried a little in the end. The ending couldn’t have been more perfect.
If you’re an avid Jamie McGuire reader, I’m sure you’ll join in my sentiment that I feel like I’ve waited forever for Shep and Mare’s story. In such a quick read, these two have put my heart through the ringer but I’m not sure I would have had it any other way. This dual point of view novella filled a little crack in my heart that I wasn’t even aware existed.
“Sometimes, good-bye is a second chance. Clears your head. Anyway…missing someone makes you remember why you loved that person in the first place.”
As much as I love the other heroines of the series, I’ve always held a special place for America. She’s been this fierce little firecracker since the moment we were introduced to her, and that trait has never wavered. We see a whole lot of that in Something Beautiful, but we also see a little bit of a vulnerable side to her. It showed readers that she was human with insecurities and made her more real in my eyes. I’m also now pretty much sold on the fact that Shepley doesn’t get enough credit as a book boyfriend! I freaking fell in love with him in this novella! He was tenacious, vulnerable, strong-willed, and simply put, a Maddox through and through.
“I never stay lost for long. I can always find my way back to you.”
I think what set Something Beautiful apart from the other novels in the series is that America and Shepley weren’t trying to kindle a relationship. They were fighting so hard to maintain a love they both knew in their hearts was there. Despite issues arising, miscommunication, and even a lack of conversation at times, neither wanted to give up hope. That message is so strongly appropriate in a world where we are so quick to throw away what means the most to us when it gets hard.
