In a Wish on Gardenia Street we get to see Leona marry her love Zack. This is the couple from the first book in the series The Promise of Palm Grove. Here we pick up with the week of their wedding. Leona’s friend Mattie arrives with stars in her eyes determined she’s going to marry the groom’s best friend. After all, that’s what a few letters exchanged means right? I was hooked right from the beginning wanting to see this couple get married but was a bit put off by Mattie’s love stuck ideals. What’s so special about best friends marrying best friends. I get it though, she wanted what Leona had, the stars in your eyes forever kind of love. It made sense to her she could find it in Zack’s best friend. She didn’t find love but what she found was a true meaningful friendship that will last a lifetime. Normal couples experience stress when planning a wedding and Amish couples are no different. However, add in a crazy cat lady who has lost her beloved cat Serena and you have the makings of a disaster! Not only are Zack and Leona trying to plan a wedding but now Zack is charged with finding Mrs.Sadler’s cat. Why she chooses Zack nobody really knows but he feels a loyalty to the lady and has always been successful in returning Serena in the past. Needless to say it isn’t as easy as it seems and all four friends are out looking for the cat daily while trying to plan a wedding. One of my favorite lessons and quotes from the book is "All she had to do was believe, dream, hope, and have faith". No matter what we face: a wedding, a runaway cat, a love struck friend…whatever, as long as we have faith in God all of it will work out for the good just as He promised. And Yes, the cat was found along with a few extra surprises. Who doesn’t love surprises??

In this lovely novella, Shelley Shepard Gray takes us on a bus ride back to beautiful Pinecraft, Florida. We’re going back with Mattie Miller for her best friend Leona’s wedding. Mattie is also looking forward to seeing Danny Brenneman again. They’ve been corresponding since her first visit there. She’s hoping a romance will bloom and she’ll be able to move to Pinecraft and live near her best friend.

While there is still plenty to do before the wedding, that rascally cat Serena is missing again. You’ll remember that Leona and Zack met when Zack was trying to get Serena out of a tree. Mrs. Sadler is frantic because her precious cat has once again disappeared even though Serena does it on a regular basis. This time, however, she’s been gone longer than usual.

I love that the Amish think of others and put their needs aside to help each other. As I mentioned, Leona has much to do before her wedding and Mattie came to town early to help her. Even with all that, the four friends spend a great deal of their time in search for missing Serena.

You’ll enjoy spending time with our four friends again. You’ll love going back to Yoder’s for pie and Olaf’s for ice cream. You’ll be so engrossed in the lives of our friends and finding Serena that you won’t want to put this book down.

Where is that darn cat?! Why did she stay away this time instead of returning home? Does love bloom for Mattie and Danny? What of the wedding? Did everything get done in time? You’ll have to pick up this book and find out!

Thank you Shelley for an another great read!!

Mattie Miller travels by bus from Walnut Creek, OH to Sarasota, FL and stays at Orange Blossom Inn to attend the wedding of her best friend, Leona, to fiancé, Zack. Since she last saw Leona, Danny Brenneman and Mattie had been exchanging several letters. Mattie took the communication as a sign that Danny may be interested in more than just friendship. And so, she’s anxious to see Danny again.

Mrs. Sadler is in a tizzy because her cat, Serena, is missing. It’s not the first time, but Mrs. Sadler gets upset each time. So, the four, Leona, Zack, Mattie, and Danny take off looking for Serena. When Mattie first sees Danny, he smiles at her, but makes little effort to get her alone so they can talk. Mattie is not sure what to think; he’s sending mixed messages.

This was a short and very pleasant read. I did think that Mattie kind of jumped the gun a bit with Danny. She practically demanded to know of his interest in her one way or the other. The characters stayed true to their Amish tradition and their actions very authentic. It’s a clean romance, but it is really more about friendship and a very close-knit community. My kindle version of the book included excerpts from both A Wedding at the Orange Blossom Inn and A Christmas Bride in Pinecraft. Rating: 4 out of 5.

Living Buddha, Living Christ Audible – Abridged dged
Author: Thich Nhat Hanh ID: B003GWNO0W

World-renowned thinker and scholar Thich Nhat Hanh, considered by many to be a “Living Buddah”, explores the spiritual crossroads where the traditions of Christianity and Buddhism meet. Living Buddha, Living Christ reawakens our understanding of both religions and the connections between them. The best-selling author of Creating True Peace, and one of the most beloved Buddhist teachers in the West, Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh has been part of a decades-long dialogue between the two greatest living contemplative traditions. In lucid, meditative prose, he explores the crossroads of compassion and holiness at which the two traditions meet, and reawakens our understanding of both. “On the altar in my hermitage,” he says, “are images of Buddha and Jesus, and I touch both of them as my spiritual ancestors.”

Review of the two Books, 1) The Lotus and the Cross by Ravi Zacharias and 2) Living Buddha Living Christ by Thich Nhat Hanh

"Awareness and faith are reflections of two Truths." Poem by Andrew Harrell about the One Buddha who is God’s Son Christ Jesus

"If we are only who we are, then who are we? And, If I AM is not who I am, then who will be?"

I have studied both these books and thought about the arguments in both of them for several years now. The one gives me reasons, some of which are based on the Bible, why I should think of my future as superior to those who don’t believe in the same theology as myself. The other concentrates on practical techniques to be more aware of both my impermanence, how to look deeper and be more compassionate to those around me, to be more open to change (independent of theology)…. But, also my permanent divine inheritance as a living gift inside of the present moment. I prefer the second.

Many Christians are quick to criticize those who teach the Buddhist and Hindu Yogic techniques of individual contemplative prayer as being un-Christian. But, after 40 years of practicing them, I am certain they are very similar to those which Jesus studied and spent a lot of time practicing when he walked on earth the for first time about 2000 years ago. One criticism is that this type of contemplative prayer does not request anything from God, it only seeks to understand how we can exist better as human beings in this present moment. Therefore, the argument goes, since we are trying to understand ourself better instead of God and since human nature is flawed in itself (something which I totally agree with) we are doomed to suffer repeated failure in these attempts.

The Other Wes Moore Free Download

The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Wes Moore ID: B003JJEGN6

Two kids with the same name lived in the same decaying city. One went on to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader. The other is serving a life sentence in prison. Here is the story of two boys and the journey of a generation. In December 2000, the Baltimore Sun ran a small piece about Wes Moore, a local student who had just received a Rhodes Scholarship. The same paper also ran a series of articles about four young men who had allegedly killed a police officer in a spectacularly botched armed robbery. The police were still hunting for two of the suspects who had gone on the lam, a pair of brothers. One was named Wes Moore.Wes just couldn’t shake off the unsettling coincidence, or the inkling that the two shared much more than space in the same newspaper. After following the story of the robbery, the manhunt, and the trial to its conclusion, he wrote a letter to the other Wes, now a convicted murderer serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. His letter tentatively asked the questions that had been haunting him: Who are you? How did this happen? That letter led to a correspondence and relationship that has lasted for several years. Over dozens of letters and prison visits, Wes discovered that the other Wes had had a life not unlike his own: Both had grown up in similar neighborhoods and had had difficult childhoods, both were fatherless; they’d hung out on similar corners with similar crews, and both had run into trouble with the police. At each stage of their young lives, they had come across similar moments of decision, yet their choices would lead them to astonishingly different destinies.Told in alternating dramatic narratives that take readers from heart-wrenching losses to moments of surprising redemption, The Other Wes Moore tells the story of a generation of boys trying to find their way in a hostile world.

In 2000, a Baltimore newspaper ran a story with the headline, "Local Graduate Named Rhodes Scholar." It was a story about the author, Wes Moore, a young black man who rose from the drug, crime and poverty-stricken streets of the city to attain this prestigious academic honor.

Several months earlier, in the same paper, Mr. Moore had noticed a series of articles about two young black men who killed a Baltimore policeman while robbing a jewelry store. The name of one of the killers struck him: his name was Wes Moore.

This coincidence prompts the author to seek out "the other Wes Moore." He contacts Wes in prison. "How did this happen?" he asks. The question jumpstarts the story of these two young men whose life paths diverged, one into triumph, the other into tragedy.

The author comes to realize that this seemingly complicated story, a too-familiar story that is freighted with societal, economic and racial impact, comes down to a few simple moments in time. "These forks in the road can happen so fast for young boys," he says. "Within months or even weeks, their journeys can take a decisive and possibly irrevocable turn."

I would more specifically pin the divergence on the boys’ mothers. The author is born into a two-parent home, both parents college educated, but his father dies when Wes is just three. His mother moves to the Bronx, so that her parents can help provide a stable home life. She works multiple jobs so that she can put her boys in private school. When the author starts to feel the pull of the streets, she packs him off to military school.

The other Wes Moore grows up in a single-parent household of starkly different character.
At first glance, this book looks like an interesting read based on an unusual coincidence. A young Baltimore man named Wes Moore, an Army officer who had just graduated from Johns Hopkins and was named a Rhodes Scholar, learned that another young Baltimore man also named Wes Moore had just been sentenced to life in prison without parole for his role in a robbery that resulted in the murder of an off-duty policeman. The first Wes Moore naturally began to wonder about why he had avoided the fate of the second Wes Moore, even though their surroundings and upbringings had been quite similar. So, in a way, this is a "Wow! It could have been me in prison!" story.

That probably would have made for an interesting book, but Moore chose to examine his life and the second Wes Moore’s life in parallel with one another in an effort to determine where– and, more importantly, why– their fates diverged. That makes this an important book, because it raises a critical question: What makes so many young men– and particularly black, poor young men raised mostly by their mothers– choose the drug trade and all of the violence that attends it as a career?

As it turns out, Moore can’t answer that question. As he explains, both he and the other Wes Moore were raised at the same time in the same high-poverty, drug- and crime-plagued area. They both began to struggle in school at about the same time. They both had early brushes with the law due to petty crimes at about the same time. However, their lives took dramatically different paths.

Moore never specifically says it, but nonetheless, as one reads his account of their parallel lives, the difference is in the ways that their mothers lived their own lives and reacted to what their sons were doing.
As a forensic psychologist, I was quite intrigued by the premise of the book but ultimately disappointed. It is presented as a study in how two boys with such similar backgrounds could have ended up in such different places – one a Rhode Scholar with a promising career in finance, the other convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. The author, Rhode Scholar Wes Moore, makes the argument that his childhood was very similar to that of the other Wes Moore, convicted felon. But from the very first chapter, the vast differences in their upbringing (even genetics) is apparent. It is never hard to understand how their lives ended up so differently – the Rhode Scholar was born into a loving, intact family with 2 college educated parents. Even after the tragic death of his father, his family remains a strong support in his life, with all sorts of relatives offering both financial and emotional support. Contrast that with the other Wes Moore, who is born to a single mother, the second of her children born out of brief, unstable relationships with alcoholic uninvolved fathers. They are worlds apart from the moment of conception but this is not acknowledged or perhaps understood by the author – at one point he acknowledges that having an adult who is invested in your well-being is key to children’s healthy development but then doesn’t relate this to how different his life was (with the support of an uncle, grandfather and a very strong and involved mother) from the other Wes Moore (whose mother left him unattended from age 8 and whose primary influence was a criminally involved older brother).

In the end, I was left with the impression that this was a vanity project for the author.

When I first saw this novella I wasn’t so sure about it. I thought it was going to be about Abby and Travis and while I love them and I want to read more about them, I didn’t want to see them go through unnecessary drama just for the sake of one more novel/novella that will give the author more money. I was glad to see that it was going to be about America and Shepley. I loved those two in Beautiful Disaster. I was expecting them at least to be married by the time this novel happens, but that wasn’t the case.

I always though of America and Shepley as the perfect couple and the one that was going to stay strong even when everything else was going to crumble down. In Something beautiful the struggle as they face some demons each one on his own and try to see how their lives will go on. Both of them want the same thing, but they just can’t seem to get it. During the whole novel I kept seeing how strongly they loved each other and I was wondering why they were doubting that love.

The little angst and everything else, made me realize what I miss in a book. It has been a while since I felt something while reading a book. I came to that conclusion when I was reading the book because I realized that I hadn’t felt this way reading a book for more time than I can remember.

The whole novella could have been characterized as over dramatic and that some things were over the top, but it doesn’t feel this way. I am not going to complain about the awful reminder of Travis’s conquests or about the spoilers I read about the Maddox brother. After reading this novella I just can’t say a bad thing about it.

I must admit that I cried a little in the end. The ending couldn’t have been more perfect.
If you’re an avid Jamie McGuire reader, I’m sure you’ll join in my sentiment that I feel like I’ve waited forever for Shep and Mare’s story. In such a quick read, these two have put my heart through the ringer but I’m not sure I would have had it any other way. This dual point of view novella filled a little crack in my heart that I wasn’t even aware existed.

“Sometimes, good-bye is a second chance. Clears your head. Anyway…missing someone makes you remember why you loved that person in the first place.”

As much as I love the other heroines of the series, I’ve always held a special place for America. She’s been this fierce little firecracker since the moment we were introduced to her, and that trait has never wavered. We see a whole lot of that in Something Beautiful, but we also see a little bit of a vulnerable side to her. It showed readers that she was human with insecurities and made her more real in my eyes. I’m also now pretty much sold on the fact that Shepley doesn’t get enough credit as a book boyfriend! I freaking fell in love with him in this novella! He was tenacious, vulnerable, strong-willed, and simply put, a Maddox through and through.

“I never stay lost for long. I can always find my way back to you.”

I think what set Something Beautiful apart from the other novels in the series is that America and Shepley weren’t trying to kindle a relationship. They were fighting so hard to maintain a love they both knew in their hearts was there. Despite issues arising, miscommunication, and even a lack of conversation at times, neither wanted to give up hope. That message is so strongly appropriate in a world where we are so quick to throw away what means the most to us when it gets hard.

The first four parts of this book are absolutely fascinating. It’s an in depth look at the psychology of shopping and it is exactly what the title promises. Underhill’s company gets paid to spy on people in stores and see what they’re doing wrong and right. The gems in this book are the anecdotes and the specific revelations about how any obstacle you put in the way of a shopper drops your sales figures. Any way you can make life easier raises your sales. This all seems sort of obvious, but most people running the businesses don’t think it through.

One example is the entry zone at the front of the store – you’d think that’s a prime location for signage, deals, brochures, etc. But when you’re headed through the door into the store you see almost nothing and stop for almost nothing, and then (in America) you tend to drift to the right and then you’re ‘in’ the store. If you put a store directory just inside the door, nobody uses it. Move it back a bit so you can find it once you’re into the store and suddenly it’s heavily utilized. He has hard observational data for all these, so they’re compelling in addition to being fascinating.

And of course all the bad examples are great fun to read (seniors crawling along floors trying to read labels on badly shelved medicine), as are the descriptions of how different groups shop (male vs female, old vs young, parents vs. single, etc.) The whole book is pretty much a commercial for Underhill’s company, but it’s still informative and fun reading.

Where the book falls down is at the end, where a chapter on the Internet is shoehorned in and a perfunctory shout out to each of Envirosell’s worldwide branches is included.

This book is clearly intended for moms, but this dad learned a lot.

I began reading this book on a plane during a business trip. Based on the title alone, no less than five flight attendants thanked me for reading it and expressed their wish that their fathers had read something similar. I was also approached by a couple of female passengers. None of my four flights passed without someone commenting on the book. Obviously, the topic of this book fills a need.

The author is unabashedly Christian, but her information and guidance are applicable regardless of your religious tendencies. If you’re uncomfortable with Christianity, just mentally substitute "grandpa" for God and "Important Psychology Textbook" for Bible, and you’ll discover that it really is universal. The author espouses her ideals but is careful to explain that each family and each daughter are different, and that an overly strict "one size fits all" approach will not be successful. She also accepts that every parent is imperfect, having made their own mistakes while growing up (and likely continuing to make mistakes). She admits her own mistakes and is very open about the abortion she had as a young woman. Obviously, this is not a woman who would disown her daughter for pre-marital sex or teen pregnancy, but she recognizes these are not the goals. This book offers great information and guidance on ways to reduce their likelihood.

What opened my eyes the most was the information on the effect of media on little girls. When I look at a covermodel on a magazine, I think "Wow, she’s hot." I generally take little notice of the men on magazine covers (sorry, I’m just a typical guy).

I read every single chapter of this book, 400 pages, and learned NOTHING new; it was a complete waste of my time. If I’m going to read an entire textbook, I’d like to at least LEARN SOMETHING. What a joke, this book is just filled with stuff you already know via common sense.

I had to have this book for my class so I figured I would buy the Kindle version because it was cheaper and more convenient. When it said it was the "Kindle Version" I assumed it would work ON my Kindle. It will NOT download onto my Kindle keyboard. It works on my Kindle app for my Mac, but not my ACTUAL Kindle!!! I don’t appreciate being punished for buying a Kindle keyboard instead of a Kindle fire. I will NOT be able to read this book unless I am at home!! I bought my Kindle a year or two ago for school, I thought it would be cool to use instead of carrying textbooks. IF I had known that I could have downloaded the Kindle app for my Mac for FREE and ALL the books would actually WORK on it, then I would have just done that instead and saved almost $200! I am EXTREMELY upset that this book will not work on my Kindle and only gave it one star because they won’t let me give anything less. Because of this experience, I will be discouraging others to buy a Kindle.

Normally I don’t make a habit of re-reading material from a college textbook, especially one out side of my major – but this book is the exception. It is well-constructed volume of information that has real world, daily applications. I found myself really examining my own behaviors and communication skills and finding areas in need of improvement versus just reading the book because the professor assigned it.

If your professor chooses this book for your class, odds are you’ve got a pretty good professor.
